Audiobooks

Well I have an advance paid and have delivered Word files to Tantor Media. The Family Law series of books will be released one by one now. I hope this is good for people who have trouble reading e-books.

Great news! We love having audio books of favorite books around even if we have read he work many times. I like to drift off to sleep with some of my favorite books playing on a sleep timer.

I hope you had great holidays – this year was a busy and fast one for me, so Christmas came as a surprise in my calendar…
I wish you a Happy New Year!
You made my 2018 with looking forward to the first Family Law audiobook 🙂

Thanks, been pretty busy too. We drove to North Carolina to visit my wife’s nephew. All her sane relatives moved there from MI in a mob back in Oct. They are encouraging us to follow. There are a number of pleasant things about that idea but my wife isn’t ready to leave her job yet. Unfortunately they came down sick and we cut our visit short. We’ll have to go back again in warm weather.

Mac – any idea how long it takes to produce an audiobook? do you get a say in the narrator or is that handled by Tantor?

    • Mac January 2, 2018 at 9:45 am #

They say about 3 months. I am profoundly hard of hearing so I’m leaving the narrator entirely in their hands. I have no useful input. It would just be a matter of taste anyway. It’s in their interest to do well.

For some reason I’d like the April series as audiobooks,

I really like the series and I can’t quite explain why so much even to my self, well other than the idea (of into space and starting to life in space) they contain and I really like that concept, there¨s just something about that idea that really really appeals to me.

It feels like THAT is the next step we humans NEED to do and sooner is better. That’s why I love what SpaceX do and what Bigelow Aerospace has planed with their B330 module, not to forget the possibilities of Reaction Engines Limited’s Sabre engine.

Though it feels like the rush to mars is missing a step.. A proper spacestation / launch platform in space for ship assembly and resupply, as it is stupid to travel up and down the gravity well too often. But that is maybe more the next next step, as the rush to mars also can be seen as massively inspirational achievement to us humans 😉

So I have started writing something that is based upon plans already in place (spaceX, Bigelow Aerospace, Nasa and more) and us, humankind building big stations.
I think I might have gone a bit overboard though, for I have created a space station concept than can be assembled piece by piece either on the ground or locally in space that include a potential working load balancing system using water. A hull design that is complete new and very experimental, but should work, hull tender bots and more..
(I have detailed descriptions of everything, even drawings, the plan was to have plans so the story could use that as a framework and simply feel more real for it.)

The hull is a layered patch work idea, that uses several experimental materials (a grapheme infused aluminum that exist, but we as of new can’t easily mass produce, a Aeroglass variant that show great radiation protection that Nasa is testing, a ballistic weave of a material that we so far can’t mass produce and a few other thing).Forged into hollow panels with the aerogel and other layers inside, then locked together, and is then layered as the hull with airtight membrane in between. It will work I just don’t know how good it will be. And of course a hull tender bot can replace damaged panels.

Well you get the idea (and this is just a tiny little glimpse of level of details). What I lack in my story is a better engine (surface to space) that work (have high hopes for the sabre engine) and a powerplant strong enough.

I digress, I’d love more audiobooks, because I have a problems with my eyesight and often is unable to read (horrible feeling when you love reading).

FYI, Tantor is estimating Apr 17, 2018 for Family Law, and the narrator chosen is Joe Hempel according to their website.

    • Mac January 17, 2018 at 7:18 am #

Interesting. They didn’t bother to tell me. Anybody have an opinion on Hempel?

      • Eric January 19, 2018 at 6:38 pm #

I’ve listened to a couple of samples. He seems pretty decent at falsetto, and I think his range is wide enough to catch a low tenor high bass for Gordon. He’s definitely a pro. I’d say it will depend on our pre-conceived notions of how everyone sounds. I know I make movies in my head while reading, so there’s a specific “voice” that I hear for each of the characters. I’ll try to find a book he’s narrated that I’m interested in and listen to it full through. I’m pretty picky about audio books though… so It might be a while 😀

          Thanks for analysis.

Do you think the new book might come out this month? I hope?

    • Anonymous January 18, 2018 at 7:33 pm #

I am not Mac. I don’t play him on TV.
However, from what he said in earlier posts I don’t think it will come out this month or next.

The first three Family Law audio-books are listed and priced at tantor dot com – Narrator is the same for all Three Joe Hempel. Order buttons are shown but not active, pre-order button was removed (I think it was an error). Sadly the audio sample does not contain voice samples of the characters, but the dictation is quite good.

    – Family Law – Apr 17, 2018 (Audio Complete) (Sample available)
    – Long Voyage of the Little Fleet – May 15, 2018 (In recording/audio post production) (Sample available)
    – Secrets in the Stars – Jun 12, 2018

Looks like the Pre-order is up for Family Law on Audible now

    • Mac April 4, 2018 at 7:34 am #

For the first three apparently – https://tantor.com/author/mackey-chandler?dir=asc&order=publication_date

      You the narrator?

      • Fargoer April 5, 2018 at 2:28 pm #

Right, but I’m talking Audible specifically — https://www.audible.com/pd/Sci-Fi-Fantasy/Family-Law-Audiobook/B07BVX2T25

        • Mac April 9, 2018 at 11:43 am #

Didn’t know that – and am not familiar with the various sites. Being deaf I don’t really know audiobooks very well. Tantor doesn’t waste a lot of effort communicating with the author so far. I did ask if the audiobooks would show up on my Amazon sales pages, and they said yes. I just checked and the first is for pre-sale on my Amazon page! Sweet. Wish I could hear you Joe…

          • Eric April 13, 2018 at 2:19 pm #

Just pre-ordered Family Law! Excited to get it Tuesday.

Coming at this particular thread very late but I just wanted to assure anyone thinking of buying any of the Family Law series in available in audio that Joe Hempel is an absolute pro, and he does a great job. I encourage everyone to buy them to ensure they keep producing them. It’s a shame the April series hasn’t been taken up as audio as it is a great read. Maybe if the Family Law series sells well as audio someone might pick it up. Thanks for the entertainment Mackey.
