About Mac
Mac' Chandler is supposedly retired. At the end of 2022 I moved from Rochester MI to the milder climate of North Carolina and a condo without steps much more suited to my age. (75 as I write this)
Writing is still fun and I intend to continue as long as my mind stays fresh. I'm not a expert on English or a skilled grammarian but I love to tell a story. I thank all the people who take a moment to tell me they enjoyed my work.
Are you no longer using KU?
Definately using KU – if it isn’t listed I’ll check it off when it becomes accessible later tonight. I have a typo in the blurb to fix too.
Yeah they changed the form a bit and I blew right past it because they didn’t CALL it KU. Fixed it.
can’t wait for it to propagate so I can snag it.
It is there just not showing linked to the other 5 Family Law books or KU eligible: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0917X4YTW/ref=sr_1_4?crid=35R92UXPNOD5K&dchild=1&keywords=another+word+for+magic&qid=1616887233&s=digital-text&sprefix=another+word+%2Cdigital-text%2C184&sr=1-4
They made the details of which series it is in part of the forms I had to fill out so I’m sure it will catch up once it all propagates through their systems.
Thank you! I will have to buy it right away, as I am in a reading slump and this is sure to get me out of it, lol. Also, thanks to whoever posted the link, as that made it a bit easier to find.
awesome!
Just showed up in Singapore on Amazon, but I had to search for “Mackey Chandler Another Word For Magic”. Either Mackey Chandler alone or the title alone wouldn’t pull it up.
Probably just because it is a new release and still propagating through the Amazon system.
Thanks Mac’!
Not sure if this will post successfully but going to try anyway, Mac I keep finding it won’t let me post replies and instead just redirects to a page saying “Spam Deleted”.
Is the comment/reply system meant to be so restrictive, as first I thought it wouldn’t let me post 3 comments in a row but I tried to reply to your KU reply yesterday on this post, but it wouldn’t let me do so.
Are there a set of rules or restrictions in place that you can share, or better yet can you please relax the spam filter?
I’m having problems. The lady who tends this page for me had her husband die and she isn’t responding to e-mails. She holds the domain name for me and it’s going to be complicated if I have to abandon this blog.
I’m having the same problem as Myzifer. Trying to let you know I’ve got it and enjoyed it. Thanks
I’m trying to get her to fix it.
Finished reading it on KU. Went back and bought it outright and posted a review.
Was a great continuation of April and Family Law. Didn’t notice any major continuity errors on first read through.
Another Word for Magic
Bought it 09:30. Finished it same evening.
MORE..more.. gimmee more.
Seriously, April & Family Law series are addictive – in the best possible way.
Only problem now is the wait till the next book.
Hi,
clickable hyperlink not working on your home page, but you can cut/paste
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0917X4YTW
I am firefox, so it might be browser related.
book is not on this page (author page, i have it bookmarked)
https://www.amazon.com/Mackey-Chandler/e/B004RZUOS2
Will see if I can fix it. Nope. No idea why.
Bought it, not a speed reader, so enjoying it at my speed. As with the other books in the series it will get a reread, and another reread etc. Thank you for sharing your imagination!
Bought it, read it, loved it, sigh… now I have to wait for my next fix. 🙂
Excellent. Thank you.
The best thing about your series of books is that at book 5, 6 or 7 they didn’t go off on a tangent. I have enjoyed all of April/Family Law books. And I loved this magic one! Now, hurry up with MORE please!
I recently finished re-reading all the April books. But this time, before reading them, I edited them to remove all the scenes in California post-Vandenberg bombardment from all the books and put them into a separate ebook.
I found reading both the April books and the new one I created with only the backstory of the Foy’s much more enjoyable this way than having these 2 quite separate tales intermixed. I enjoyed reading both, just not mixed together.
I’m currently re-reading the Family Law books. I just got towards the end of the 3rd book, and noticed a potential problem. Lee is being directed to Custom Tailored Genes, in “the newest hab, number three”.
a) that should probably be referred to as Gamma
b) if Jelly was on Gamma when it ended up around Mars, I can’t see him silently putting up with what was going on there
c) for the story (LET for Derf and other races), it would be much better if Jelly ends up around Derfhome
Next problem with FL3, I can’t imagine any scenario in which the very limited amounts of quantum fluid would be used for a gravity device in the lift on Gamma.
In the latest update version of FL4, the problem that the letters from the lawyers about the claims commission planning to reestablish their authority was signed by “Moore, Harper, Goldberg and McPherson, Attorneys at Law” (the family law lawyers) instead of “Green, Bennett, and Glenn, Attorneys at Law” (the claims lawyers) has been fixed.
BUT, a few lines later, it still says:
Today, given how McPherson alarmed her, Lee went straight…
…
“Read this letter Stanley sent us.
These need to be fixed as well still.
Very nice book! Trying to avoid spoilers makes positive examples difficult, so let me just mention that I enjoyed that the problems of metal-based currencies are finally brought up. Yeah, Jeff’s Solars – especially the platinum ones – are basically screwed. Hopefully, they won’t take the entire bank with them.
A slight continuity problem with keeping the timelines separated though: Basically every mention of Armstrong is anachronistic. It would fit well into the original April series, but in the Family Law series, Armstrong is the capital of the Lunar Republic and should be firmly pro-spacers in the public mind. They did after all chase out all the Americans as child thieves just a few books (and years) ago.
It’s already established that Earthlings not only know little about anyone in space, but what they do know is seriously distorted by propaganda – even at the highest levels of government. So a newly appointed Secretary of State thinking the Lunar Republic is friendly to the USNA (when the real attitude is “friendly” only relative to the Home/Central attitude of “go die in a fire”) isn’t all that incredible.
What I’m wondering is – where are the Texans in space? They haven’t built warships, or we’d have heard about them by now; but they should have explorers and colonies under the Claims Commission’s remit. I don’t see how the USNA could have kept them out of space, when so many other nations were in it.
If that were the only example, OK, can be argued about a lot. Unfortunately, it’s not.
Even apart from the fact that previous books already showed that the Lunar Republic is just as demonized as other spacers (see the executed-for-firing-solid-slugs sub-plot or the “they don’t want our votes” quote from the lady Vet a bit later), it’s not only the earthlings that treat Armstrong like the old USNA colony instead of the present-day Lunar Republic’s capital.
Central did it too, which doesn’t compute regardless of earth propaganda.
For example, it’s mentioned that after the USNA gravel-bombards Home, Central stopped relaying traffic data to Armstrong.
This makes no sense on several levels. Said traffic data was relayed in the first place only because the earth powers didn’t want to accept Central as a traffic authority. So going by that logic, Central should have stopped the relay a century ago, as soon as they declared independence. Now, it’s entirely possible that tradition or just plain inertia kept the practice alive (it’s a single sentence after all, so who cares) but if that’s the case, why stop it now because of something the USNA did?
The comment that Central had so much trouble from Armstrong that they now check everyone for heavy weapons, explosives etc is less conclusive (I would assume the Lunar Republic would police their own better, but who knows?) but still evokes more of an adversarial 2100 (April timeline) than a firm-allies 2200 (Family Law) feeling. Doubly so because the quote in question is in the present. “We have enough trouble ….”
That’s not something I would expect to hear about a century-old security measure.
Taken together it’s IMHO pretty clear that most if not all passages that mention Armstrong were written under the subconscious assumption that the book is part of the April timeline, not the Family Law timeline.
Yeah need Texans in space.
FL4: Ha-b0b-bob-brie (Notice the zero)
FL4:
Born’s housekeeper appeared at the door from his quarters, looking amused but expectant.
“Now, we’ll have some lunch, Norman,” Bacon instructed. Norman nodded, smiling. He seemed to have anticipated events.
Should be:
Bacon’s housekeeper…
thanks
Chapter 24, fifth word?
Will look.
Actually Chapter 23!
Oh dear, no-one has mentioned the problem that only Sharp Claws is available as the heavy Cruiser Retribution is off with Thor and part of the exploring Little Fleet and therefore not at Derf or able to go to Providence.
It is also Lee’s ship and not subject to the Mothers’ disposition.
If Retribution was back then so would be the Little Fleet and there would be discussion of what was found.
No-one also mentioned the interesting thing in system 4803
Did the USNA develop a Stealth ship?
Stealth from a small ship, radar absorbing coatings, linear heat radiators, shielded opto-electronics, ‘cool’ fusion generator, etc.
Also while there have been extrasolar attacks there is much the USNA owns around earth
War against stellar USNA
– capture or destroy their orbital shipyards in LEO & L4 (they no longer need them but Lee could use them at Providence or Derf)
1. the military shipyards that built their warships e.g. drones, couriers, corvettes, frigates, destroyers, cruisers, battleships, etc.
2. the civilian shipyards that built their explorer ships, planetary survey ships, science ships, construction & engineering ships, liners, tankers, freighters, etc. and yards that built space stations for the USNA interest extrasolar worlds, etc.
– capture or destroy their LEO stations (they can no longer service or supply them).
War against interstellar USNA
– capture or destroy their gas giant refueling points (they no longer need them)
– capture or destroy their warships e.g. couriers, corvettes, frigates, destroyers, cruisers, battleships (they no longer need them)
– capture or damage their logistic ships e.g. military tankers, freighters, engineering ships, landers, shuttles, etc. (they no longer need them)
– capture or damage their registered civilian ships e.g. Exploration ships, Planetary Survey ships, Service & Science Fleet ships, Repair & Engineering ships/factory ships, freighters, tankers, liners, etc. (they no longer need them)
– capture or damage their spacestations around their dependent planetary living worlds and important systems e.g. Amber/SS 4799, New Troy SS 4807, etc. (they can no longer service or supply them)
Will check that out in the morning – Good thing I am wrapping it up soon – it’s getting too hard to remember and too big to search.
Yeah I screwed up – going to change the retribution the The Champion William with explanations.
Whoops forgot something.
There are also freight transfer stations where routes between inhabited living worlds cross so if any are USNA owed or operated add them to the capture / damage list.
Another possibility with less need for the Champion William to turn up (and explanations) would be a visiting Fargone warshp that offered assistance.
Mistakes are inevitable as no human is perfect and that is why beta readers, editors etc are useful. I know the authors I’m a beta reader for appreciate the help.
I recall that you did briefly have a Texan in space, though I don’t remember which story at the moment. Wasn’t it a Texas Ranger that foiled one of the many assorted assassination plots in the cafeteria?
Now that it’s been mentioned, I find the lack a bit odd, too. Once they broke away from the USNA and gobbled up much the southwest, it seems odd that the Texas Republic (or whatever they officially call themselves) wouldn’t be chomping at the bit to get out into space – the ultimate last frontier.
I would think that the stereotypical don’t tread on me, devil may care Texas attitude would be the closest any Earth nation could come to Home’s political philosophy, perhaps making them friendly towards each other if not allies.
Yeah, Texans in space. I’d pay to see that show!
The Texas Ranger in the Home cafeteria happened in the April books, shortly after Texas seceded. (I’d like to say April 10, the book where we first hear of Texas seceding. But I’m not sure of that.) Another Word for Magic is the first book in the Family Law period that refers to an independent Texas.
Want to is very different from have the finance and infrastructure to do so – spaceports, orbital lifters, orbit-to-orbit craft, shipyards, etc. They need the first three to even access space on their own.
There are only around 30 Human explorers and at least 6 belong to Home and the rest government owned, university owned or corporate owned. Fargone has at least one.
Lee should be able to find out a lot about Providence by accessing the System Development Plan and Schedule (probably developed on Earth and implemented by the Station Master’s team) and the Planetary Development Plan and Schedule (also possibly developed on Earth and implemented by the Governor’s team) as these should say what has been done, part done, yet to be done and who has done it and when and to what standard.
From this a list of involved companies (or individual contractors) and whether USNA or another nationality.. People involved should’ve seen it or parts of it and the whole thing is possibly present unless they were sending monthly action lists to both by drone and keeping the whole plan on Earth.
Besides, her team of lawyers on earth should have up-to date information about all relevant contracts.
Thorsten, all relevant contracts could be the the ones that pay her and Gordan money but not those that that aren’t.
We know from other books that benefits to companies can take many years to payoff, so there could be many players that aren’t currently paying them..
While that doesn’t seem like something a quarterly reporting company would do it does sound like something pension funds might invest in (given final payoffs are worthwhile) or perhaps the deals aren’t purely financial but hybrids, offering a path into share ownership..
Colonization of planets was a well-established process that benefitted most if not all parties but probably to different degrees.
But given the marginal cost of additional messages or data on message drones I should expect that their capacity was completely filled but not just by premium payers (unless they take up the full capacity) but also by consumers and if capacity is maxed then either more data capacity or modded message drones to maximise profits.
are you wrapping up april series or family law series or both series???
I can’t see how I can finish bridging the two series in just one book so there need to be at least two more April books. I see the need for at least one more Family law book. I have plenty of material for that in unknown aliens/known aliens and exploration of Central worlds. I have other books I’d like to write and several stand alone books that could use sequels.
All that said I am coming up on my 74th birthday and don’t seem to be having any more cognitive decline than I had at 50 or 60, but at my age not waking up any particular morning is always an increasing possibility.
You’re only two years older than I am, so feel I’m not out of bounds in strongly suggesting not dying until you have run out of books to write. 🙂
On a slightly different topic, If only Heinlein had lived to read your April series (at least, that’s the only one I’ve begun reading so far), I suspect he would have been quite impressed.
I’ll make every effort to let you die first. Promise.
As the Champion William returned why no explanation of its return alone, why no update on what the second voyage of the Little Fleet found, why no explanation why Lee’s share in the second voyage was possibly going to be reduced by this ship’s abscence from the fleet unless the fleet has stopped exploring, why no explanation why the ship needed a new Captain.
Lots of explained things.
Congratulations on another excellent book! The April/Family Law series has become my favorite. I will continue to buy your books as they come out.
Did anyone notice that this was the first book that he put ‘the end’ at the end of the book?
Not so. Don’t read too much into the ending phrase. I’m not that subtle.
