Since early 2023 Amazon only allows bought books to be read on a kindle and blocks putting them on any other e-readers.
I will buy your book regardless, but it is a pain in the behind reading it on a tablet or laptop.
No I do Amazon exclusive, Michiel. They allow me to loan books in the KENP program. That’s grown to be 2/3rds of my income. I get paid a bit less than a half cent a page read but then I’ve have over 83 million page views. I’ll try to see if there is a work around. I didn’t ask for DMR copyright protection for exactly this reason.

I have bought the book last night and are halfway through on Amazons webreader on my tablet.
Since early this year Amazon stopped using the AZW format and only supply in their new KFX format that is not convertible. So even without DRM you can only read it on a kindle, or wait for a pirated .epub version (that I do not want to do out of principle).
It is important that you can make some income on this, so I have no criticism on your publication choices. I do find it personally frustrating however that Amazon is working so hard on a total monopoly on books I like. Once you buy a kindle you can never switch to another brand for the rest of your life or you loose your whole library.

There are a number of work-arounds. One is to use Calibre to store and read your files. Another is to get a used Paperwhite and register that. With a Paperwhite registered, you can still download your books in AWZ3 format so you can transfer them to Calibre and use Calibre to read them or download them to something else. Who knows how long Amazon will let that happen, but for now it’s working. I read on the Paperwhite, but use Calibre to keep my library separate from Amazon, so no clawback. Calibre can also convert the files to other formats like epub or pdf.
You stated that you used a webreader on your tablet, but there are Kindle Apps for tablets that functionally makes your tablet work like a Kindle. If it is an Android tablet you can download it from Google Play and Apple store for IPad’s. If it is an older tablet that can’t use the Kindle 5.0 App you can google and sideload the app to your tablet (I had to do this for my old tablet).

I am glad to see the Foy’s have finally “caught up” with the rest of the team, and I’m hopeful that now we won’t see any more of them. (I’ve never liked that particular arc – not for any reason other than “it’s a distraction”.)
It seems like you’ve mastered the choppy techno-thriller style, of little updates to each of a dozen different characters in sequence. Some of the earlier books tried this, but the updates were individually longer and it was actually harder reading.
This book seems to be worth comparing to some of the Vorkosigan books. There’s a lot more comedy and a lot more “fluff”, with the heavy technical stuff floating in the background. That’s always been there to some extent, with mining and spaceship-building in the background. But while Nick Naito is no Ivan Vorpatril, in this book there is more time spent talking about his dishwashing job than about the various attempts to kill him.

Yeah I haven’t made a chart and tried to have exact dates for everything. In fact I’ve avoided dates unless something demands a date like an official communication or a demand with a deadline.
About short lifers forgetting things – Official memory is very short. A person may live 80 years – but the window in which their memories are something that helps shape official actions and policy is very short. They have a brief window of seniority before they retire. Twenty years max in most cases. Sometimes much less.
People are very slow to believe anything that contradicts what they already know.
The April series starts in the 2080s, Family Law starts in the 2190s so you’re right on target for the beginning of both series.
The internal timeline of the April series is not internally consistent (the characters’ ages and the number of winters once we reach the Foyes PoVs say ~10 years but the semi-frequent descriptions of “so-and-so is not in the living memory of short lifers anymore” say it’s a lot longer), so we don’t know how many years the series takes internally.
I think “the short-lifers forgot what happened” is more a commentary on the heavily censored press in Earth nations than a measure of time passing. People do remember that Home rebelled, and wrecked both North America and China. But the reasons why they did so never became public knowledge on Earth – the people who knew the reasons kept them secret, even from their successors. It isn’t so much forgetting, as never learning in the first place.
With that in mind, I’d say the series’ chronology is roughly consistent, and the books so far cover a bit less than ten years. April itself might have to be shifted forward to 2084 for complete consistency with its sequels, but I don’t see any other problems.
I really enjoyed the new book and catching up on the various characters.
It did leave me wondering what happened to April’s father who when last seen was managing the home station, or her grandfather who hasn’t been heard of, since he was rescued from mars. They should have been invited to the grand ball.
I would have expected Happy Lewis have got invo;ed with exploring?
I’ve got so many characters in the series I can’t give them a speaking role in every book. You may notice I brought some characters from April forward in the last Family Law book. I’ll do the same with her dad and grandpa in 15 or the next Family Law. Not so much her mom maybe. She was always closer to her dad.
After considering it I am giving her grandpa cameo and her dad a reason not to be there.

The Foys : Cowboys in Space! I really appreciate the understanding Farming and Ranching is as difficult and specialized as rocket science without the help of a thousand technical people with specialties helping. Typical ranch a dozen people versus nature. A launch facility and rocket building a few thousand people.
I have a question. Has Gamma been built yet? I thought that a few decades away. In a couple of places they talk about three habs and specifically Gamma. It seems they just built Beta. Is this a little Family Law slipping in?
I haven’t made that clear – it is but I just never added anything about it to the story line.

Mr. Chandler, I usually check your site more often for updates on your work and didn’t see the new book for a week or so. It was a great read as all the others have been. I think your integration of the Family Law and April storylines are great. I can’t really decide which characters I enjoy the most but I’d probably give Gordon and Lee the slight edge.

They are offered. Tandor is very conservative financially. They want to earn out the current books before advancing me more. That’s fine with me – it probably means they’ll still be around in a year or two when many companies who tried to expand to the max won’t be.
