Kindle issues
May 7th, 2025 | Ramblings
Several people have described not being able to save books under the new file type. I understand the program Epubor can do that for about $30. I haven’t tried it. If anyone else does please report back to us.
Amazon changed their DRM on April 23 and locked out Kindle for PC 2.4.0 from downloading ebooks published after that date. Epubor does not – yet – decrypt ebooks downloaded by Kindle for PC versions more recent than 2.4.0, so – for the moment – you can’t use Epubor and Kindle for PC to save new ebooks.
I emailed Epubor’s tech support about this; they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix.
The most recent version of Epubor can save ebooks from a Kindle e-ink reader with the current firmware from Amazon, so if you’ve got one of those you can still pull your ebooks off of it.
Thanks for the update. I wonder if installing an earlier version of Kindle for PC might work?
The answer is Yes, But … Even if you select Don’t Update Automatically, the Kindle for PC sometimes does anyway, so you have to be ready to re-install the earlier version (and keep the installation file on your computer to make sure it’s available. Amazon goes out of their way to make like as complicated as possible for those who just want to read books on devices other than Amazons.
I’ve been using Calibre (free!) but haven’t purchased any books published that recently from Amazon. I’ll report back the next time I see an Amazon book that I can’t resist. I’m hoping that it’s just the books with DRM that will have issues.
There are still work-arounds, but they’re complicated. It’s hard to stay one step ahead of Amazon. It’s why some authors sell directly from BookFunnel for a short time before going on KU.
Will check them out.
I listen to most of my books with tts that amazon apps/devices don’t support.
So since amazon made it impossible to download books, I’ve been unable to buy/read from amazon.
If you own an eInk Kindle (ie, not Amazon Fire), you can download KU books to that device and still manage to convert them to other formats using Calibre and a couple of plugins. The critical one being https://github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools.
But really, having something like BookFunnel where we can buy direct from you would be the best option.
