Great book. I very much enjoyed it.

My only issue is that you aren’t putting a new one of these out each month like P.S. Power.

I’m 72 and have a life outside this!

    thank you
I look forward to read the book
I am currently re-reading the whole series and it is su much FUN!

Loved the book, including the farce at the storage unit. However there are still some editing mistakes, mainly punctuation, but in chapter 18, Born is called Bacon a couple of times. But I really enjoyed the book!

Thank you. I will look for that and fix it. – And done.

“That predates Human contact by a couple of hundred years”

Okay, this just bugs about the Derfhome Old Hotel. A couple or three decades pre-contact I can see, but not centuries. I know Derf technology was somewhat unevenly distributed, but this is too much.

Terry Dean, I’m confused as to why you’re having problems with the Old Hotel. “A couple or three decades pre-contact I can see, but not centuries.” Why not centuries, the Derf have had a stable civilization for thousands of years, what’s the problem with having the Old Hotel (whatever it was called before humans and English language showed up recently). The last war fought was a thousand years ago (until, again Earthy humans arrived and stuck their foot in it).

Thank you and I have it

Just finished the book. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Definition of “slow-learner”:USNA!
I can see parallels in the current news. Some people can’t seem to learn from history or are so arrogant that they think it will be different this time because WE (USA) haven’t done it. So sad. Looking forward to your next book in either series.

    Just finished.
    I liiiiked it.

“Apparently it was generating thrust along the long axis”.

Really? Imagine that. Just think of the possibilities.

Some thoughts on the Gravity Lance.

My understanding is that the gravity lance is produced by spinning a quantity of ‘quantum fluid’. The gravity lance is at a right angle to the spinning disc, (one side only.) The precise effect of the lance is unclear. From what fI can gather it punches a hole. (depth unclear….but somewhat deep).

Exactly HOW the hole is produced?.

Does it cause a linear explosion (possibly microfusion?) along it’s length when it hits matter or does it merely cause the matter to condense along it’s path creating a ‘pipe’? Either effect would effect a mechanical effect (BANG!)

Can the power be regulated (range, size and depth of ‘pipe’.

How fast does it take to recharge? Would it make an effect point defense for incoming objects? (missiles, space junk)

Or is it a ‘presser’, is the hole created like punching your finger in wet sand?

Is the intensity a variable or is it a tipping point effect?

    ************************Spoiler Alert!!! *****************Spoiler Alert*****************h

Jeff’s gravity lance is produced by a spinning disk of quantum fluid. Lee’s gravity is produced by a spinning disc of a glasalloy, both of which are ‘electro-mechanical’.(moving parts…the spinning quantum fluid or glassaloy disk) Both of which are ‘spun up’ under a magnetic field.

Suppose the magnetic field is rotated around the glassaloy, leaving the disk stationary?

Suppose the magnetic field is a variable.(would the glassaloy have to be disc shaped in that event?

The term ‘phase array’ comes to mind. (zero mechanical parts)

Suppose the intensity is variable over the area of the glassaloy, possible around the perimeter?

What happens if the ‘wave form’ of the magnetic changes. (sine wave, square wave, frequency, power, etc. etc.

Presser, tractor and other beams or fields perhaps?

Could a gravity lance projector be miniaturized to the point of being a small arm,

a personal transport, (jet pack), invisibly cloak?)

Could a combination presser/tractor beam(field) be used as a shield, either personal or for a ship?

    Just wondering.

Think collapsing the field along a line that results in local intense tidal forces. That’s what is in my head. So it doesn’t require a lot of energy – rather it is manipulating the potential energy already in the field. That may be used to develop other devices in future stories. What happens when that energy is extracted. What does it do and how far does the effect reach??? (Nice to see you Mick)

        thanks..
one thing that I REALLY like about your stories is ‘if this ….then what”?

What might the long term effects of a technological advancement be? You do it really well. I’m eagerly waiting for more.

P.S. Your idea about brown dwarfs is pretty cool.

For the next cover have them do a picture of Gordon. Is the current cover supposed to be Lee? April?

    • Everitt Mickey July 14, 2019 at 8:19 pm #

Speaking of Derf….I’m kinda curious about what they look like myself.
Since the gal on the cover had a ‘blaster’ I assumed she was April.

    • Mac July 21, 2019 at 12:30 pm #

Honestly – I haven’t been able to get a cover made to match a particular scene in a book. Even giving the artist the description of the character in the book did not result in a match to my mind. I suppose if I paid thousands of dollars for an original oil like Baen does I’d come closer – but I’m at the hundreds of dollars for a cover level not thousands.

Well, this was very good. I’m ready for another.

Just finished and, as usual, I LOVED it. I, too, got a kick out of the storage farce. Found myself counting in fingers and toes to keep all the players straight! Looking forward to your next yarn.

I’ve read thru “Friends” twice and enjoyed it thoroughly. I especially loved the not quite final solutions for the HABs. I also loved checking in on past characters to see how they are doing. Here is my wish list of characters I’d like to explore more of: 1. I’d like to read a novella about Gordon and how he came to partner with Lee’s parents. Also, while we’re at it, I’d like to know more about Gordon’s family and Derf culture. 2. More about Eddie as he is one of my favs. I can’t wait to see how he and other investors build 2 new have.

Which First Mother is Gordan’s mom? I love that William is his father but not being able to tell which was his mother is a little itch in my brain.
