I have six free copies to offer to the visually impaired who are often low income. If that describes you or a friend/family member it’s on the honor system. First come first served. Email me at gordonderf@gmail.com and I’ll send a code and instructions.

Mac is no one interested in Narrating/voice acting the April series? I would hope for the people that did Family law would step up. I would love to listen to what I have read a number of times.
Tantor approached me for the first four from Family Law.
I offered the stand alone and two more Family Law and they accepted.
When they get the next two up I’ll offer the April series.
Hey Mac!
Currently narrating the two most recent Family Law books. Wrapping up book 5 today, starting book 6 Wednesday!
Depending on the POV of the April series would love to be the one to do those since I know the worlds and characters, so if they accept, would love to be asked to do those.
I’ll offer the series to them Joe. We’ll see if they accept. I’m almost done with April 13 and expect at least one more book to bridge to to the Family Law series. I suspect they will buy three or four at a time if they take them. I so wish I could hear how you’ve done them but I’m profoundly hard of hearing. you might as well say deaf for vocal frequencies. If you’d like to lok at April or any of the later titles let me know and I’ll send them.
Well thus far the ratings for the audiobooks are 4.5-5 stars, so I think it’s safe to say they are well received, and the performances are just as highly marked, which makes me quite happy.
If they do take them, please make sure you request me as the narrator and that way your listeners will have a familiar voice taking them on the ride who cares for the characters 🙂
You’ve got my vote Joe, you’ve done a great job with Lee and Gordon in my opinion. I listen to the Family Law series fairly regularly, and would love to be able to get the April Series in audio as well.
Nice to get an opinion on that since I can’t hear them.
M. Siegfried, that means a lot, it really does!
Coming back to the series after 4 or so years is a challenge that I was up for, so at least you have the next 2 Family Law books coming your way! One in Sept, and one in Oct!
Excited to hear about April 13! I just finished rereading the series for the fourth time. Any idea when the book will be out?
Sometime in Sept. I hope. I’ve been promised a cover and am in the middle of editing. Life is busy with medical stuff for my wife and I’m picking up the slack a lot on things she can’t do. I just had another mail begging for a snippet – I’ll see if I can’t find something that doesn’t give away too much.
If it’s outer or middle ear issues for your hearing, then you might want to try bone conduction earphones, they can also be setup with an app to pickup and amp up sounds around your phone.
Plus as they don’t block your ears it means you can still listen to normal sounds unless you want to put in earplugs for greater isolation.
Nope – nerves.
I will throw a vote in to let him do the april series. I and my two girls 8 and 11 have listened to all the family law books he has narrated so far and loved them. All three of us are pretty snobby about quality of voice reading ability, and such and Mr. Hempel does a good job. Lol.. had no idea who it was as (Sorry Mr. Hempel) I never really pay attention to who reads stuff. However now that I know just want you to know we enjoy your work 🙂
I traded emails with Ms. Hummel at Trantor. They are open to doing the April books but would like to make some $ off the ones they are working on now before spending more for new. Sounds reasonable to me.
I can only imagine the complexity of their calculations if they are the ones paying for the production on when to bring new books in the series into production. I know that some of the authors I follow have every new book come out in digital and audio pretty much at that same time. So either they pay the upfront production or are selling so many that the audio studio just does it as a matter or course.
I’m sure that if they cover production they get a bigger bite of sales ongoing but also have to balance how much capital they have tied up in books that haven’t broken even on yet.
A few years ago I had heard that getting a book produced started at a couple thousand. I’m sure that it is higher now and probably even higher with someone with a stellar reading voice like Mr. Hempel.
sorta change of topic
This is an author that I follow like Mr. Chandler where I check up fairly frequently to see if he has anything new out. Not as prolific as Mr Chandler but I think that is due to health reasons. His name is Nathan Lowell and his big series is the Solar Clipper series? I first found him online at one of the creative commons free media websites. He hadn’t published anything yet but had read his first 6 stories himself and posted them for free. There were no digital/ebook/print versions at all. It was a couple years later that he self published the series on amazon for the kindle. Absolutely loved those audio versions. He had posted them under one of the creative commons licenses. I imagine that messed with him using them later to sell so they redid them with another narrator from audible and that is the version sold. Mr. Lowell’s free version was absolutely stellar. I tried to listen to one of the remakes they sold with my audible membership and though I wouldn’t give a negative review at all of the narrator, having listened to Mr. Lowell’s version left that one feeling flat. I can’t imagine being able to read something I wrote and not having everyone absolutely bust me on my reading voice/monotone/cracking version.
The old stories are still out there. Used to be on podiocast.com but they got bought or merged with scribl. I still recommend buying the current versions so he gets some money but here is the link to the stories in his own voice.

Yes, running a business isn’t for the stupid or faint of heart. If you run ahead of your income and get into debt it can destroy you even if you have good product and sales. Especially like now when interest rates are going up. You can find you need to roll over excess credit you assumed and BOOM – you are history.
I never regard other authors like Mr. Lowell as COMPETITION. We could all churn out a new book a month and the market would absorb them. You guys can read a lot faster than we can scribble. We just might have to adjust our price and make it up on volume.
Scott that means so much. I hope you all enjoy books 5 and 6, they are completed and in post production.
There will be a difference in sound because of the years passed and equipment changes and well, my own style changes. But I hope you still hear the core of the character in the performance!
Friends in the Stars comes out Sept 13, Another Word for Magic sometime in October!
very cool.. i have all the existing ones on audible 🙂 looking forward to the new ones.
It has been 2 months since the last update. how are things going?
