How it goes for the author…

I had my left knee replaced a week ago. No writing has been accomplished. I’m full time dealing with medical issues. I was stupid yesterday. I got up and loaded the dishwasher. Received a couple of grocery deliveries and put them away. I assembled a walker and shower chair. The PT person was horrified I showered on a steel shop stool. I’ve never fallen off of it! The holes didn’t line up that well in the shower chair so enthusiastic application of a large dead blow hammer fixed that. For the first time since surgery I cooked supper. All of it was too much. My left leg got hot and visibly swollen compared to the right, and hurt. I consulted with a nurse by phone and was told to elevate the leg ice it and STAY that way for at least several hours. Yes, mother….

My nephew will be by later to take my wife to her doc, and after take my bedroom bath door off. It opens in and covers access to the shower controls. I’m still dealing with practical matters. First PT tomorrow at 9am.

I will sit and read my recent chapters on the new book and get my mind in the groove to hopefully add some.

    Greg,

You have my sympathy! I had my right knee replaced last year. The hardest problem I had was getting up from the commode since I couldn’t bend my knee. Any pain was dealt with by meds. However, the meds screwed up my body functions including taste. Th good news after about month it gets better. Good luck!

Damn. I had both knees replaced and had no problems. I walked out of the hospital, never needed the pain pills, and never used a cane. I did do all my PT, though. Hope it all works itself out quickly. That crap can sure get in the way of writing!

What style of procedure did you have and who did it. Thats unusually good for knees

Partial knee replacements – interior. Done by someone who does thousands a year and now does robotic surgery for better precision and less side effects. Dr Sah at Institute for Joint Restoration in Fremont CA.

The way they told me about therapy was to do what they said now, or do much more later with more pain and it would take longer. Do what you have to to get well. Many moons ago my Mom, who’s picture was under the word ‘stubborn’, had a knee fixed, then blew it out mowing the lawn and even after another surgery it never worked without pain again. Please take care of yourself, you are my favorite author, but I can wait for new words while you get better.

    Dear Mr. Chandler,
    Oh my!
Hang in there, and as much as I hate to say it, take care of your self and your wife before you worry about books.
I think your writing gets better with each book. I’d love to see more, but if you don’t take care of yourself and your wife, you are not going to be able to write much.
I wish you and your wife the best and hope things improve for you soon.
    Best wishes,
    Vince

That sounds really bad. I am very sorry and hope things get better quickly.

Being a carer and having your own medical issue to deal with sucks! Having some family help can make a huge difference. Good luck with your recovery.

Please focus on yourself and family, that sounds like more than enough right now! Good luck with the PT and healing.

Had my left knee replaced a couple years ago, they had me on PT much sooner than yours, hope it gets better soon. Try to focus on range of motion, from everything my doctor said, it really makes a difference
